Navarre, Fla. - Charlotte sophomore Mike Shamp (Charlotte, N.C./Country Day) shot a three-round, two-over par 218 (71-71-76 -- 218) to place fourth overall at the 2001 Conference USA Championships. Shamp, who was named both all-Conference USA and to the five-man all-Tournament team, led the 49ers to a 10th-place finish. Charlotte boasts three sophomores and three freshmen on its six-man roster,
University of Houston freshman Brad McIntosh shot a three under par 69 to win the individual title and lead his Cougars to their fifth straight Conference USA Men's Golf Championship at The Club at Hidden Creek.
McIntosh was the lone man in the 60-player field to break par Wednesday as he had five birdies and two bogeys in his round to finish the tournament at two-under par 214. McIntosh, named Conference USA's Freshman of the Year, defeated Louisville's Chris Campbell by one stroke. Campbell fired an even par 72 to finish at one under par 215 for the tournament. The two were joined on the C-USA All-Tournament team by third place finisher Simon Robinson of Houston, who had a one over par 73 Wednesday and was at one over 217 for the three rounds, and Charlotte's Shamp and South Florida's Tele Wightman, who tied for fourth. Second round leader Brett Hitchcock of USF was one stroke back at 219 along with Houston's Wade Ormsby.
Houston outdistanced second place finisher UAB by 16 strokes to win its fifth straight crown.
UAB's Graeme McDowell was named Conference USA Player of the Year and one of 10 members of the league's All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the event while Blazers coach Alan Kaufman was the league's Coach of the Year. McIntosh won Freshman of the Year honors.
