Navarre, Fla. - Sophomore Scott McNeil shot a 33 on the back nine to card a first round two-under par 70 and freshman Chris Lee came in at even-par 72 to lift the 49ers into third-place after the opening round of the Conference USA Golf Championships.
The 49ers, who won the event in 1995 and posted runner-up finishes in 1998 and 1999, shot a team score of 292, one stroke off the pace of co-leaders Southern Miss and TCU (291).
McNeil, who was the 49ers top finisher in each of the last two regular-season events, owns a team-best 74.5 stroke average, this spring. He opened play with a 37 on the front nine and rallied on the back to post his best round of the year.
Lee, a freshman playing in just his second tournament of the season, shot even par 72, also a personal best. Freshman John Samaha carded an opening round 74 and two-time team MVP Mike Shamp shot a 76.
