Huntersville, N.C. - In the season-opener of the spring campaign, a young Charlotte 49ers team placed 13th at the Birkdale Intercollegiate, which was concluded after two rounds due to rain.
The 49ers, who have no juniors or seniors on the spring roster, were led by sophomore Mike Shamp and freshman Clint Deibert, who carded identical rounds of 77-74 -- 151. The 49ers started slow, shooting a 311 in the first round, but responded with a 302 in the second round. Shamp, Deibert, freshman Brandon Vincent (2nd round 78) and red-shirt sophomore Andy Robertson (2nd round 76) all had better second rounds.
The tournament was played at Huntersville (N.C.)'s par 72, 7013 yard Birkdale Golf Course.
East Tennessee State (573) topped Wake Forest (578) for the tournament title. 15 teams competed.
