Player Profile

Position:
Head Coach - Sixth year

Alma Mater/Year::
Ohio Wesleyan University, 1993

Jamie Green is in his sixth year at the helm of the 49ers and his program has been nothing less than spectacular. The Niners have posted back-to-back Top 10 NCAA finishes, have reigned as the nation's consensus #1-ranked team and have won three straight Atlantic 10 Championships. The 49ers have been to four straight NCAA Tournaments, placed as high as tied for third and are one of just nine teams, nationwide that have reached the NCAA Finals in each of the last three years. Green has been named A-10 Coach of the Year three times by his peers and landed the GCAA Eaton Golf Pride South Region Coach of the Year in 2008.

The 49ers growth rivals that of any program in the country.

In his first year, he led the Niners to a runner-up finish in Conference USA. In his second, he copped another runner-up finish and the program's first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament, as an at-large invitee to the East Regional. In his third year, he headed the 49ers Atlantic 10 Championship season, a second straight NCAA East Regional berth and a qualification for the 30-team NCAA National Finals. Along the way, Charlotte secured spots in the nation's Top 25 final polls and climbed as high as #17 during the season. In year four, the 49ers again claimed the A-10 title and advanced through the NCAA Regionals to the NCAA Finals, where they placed third -- matching the best NCAA finish by any 49ers sports program. In year five, the 49ers jumped to #1 in the country by virtue of winning four straight stroke-play events, including the prestigious PING/Golfweek Preview, placed tied for 8th at the NCAA Championships and finished the year ranked in the nation's top 10 by all three major rankings.

Over the last four years, Charlotte has won 17 tournament titles -- which is tied for 2nd-most in the country. Their 15 wins in the last three years are tied for the most in the country.

In his five years, Charlotte has competed in 50 regular-season events, with 38 top five finishes. In 12 post-season events (league tournaments; NCAA Regionals, NCAA Championships), Charlotte has posted seven top five finishes. Altogether, the 49ers have claimed 17 tournament titles.

In 2007-08 Charlotte competed in 12 events, posting a school-record six wins, a runner-up finish and top 10 finishes at both the NCAA Championship and the NCAA East Regional. In 2006-07, the 49ers posted five wins and top five finishes in 10 of 13 events. In 2005-06, Charlotte placed in the top five in 12 of 13 events, making their Top 25 debut in the fall and remained ranked through the NCAA Regionals to their first National Championships appearance. The only finish outside the top five: the 22nd-place finish at the National Championships.

In addition, Green has built a strong academic program, loading his team with individuals who excel both in the classroom and on the course.

Charlotte has boasted seven GCAA all-America Scholars over the past three years (Andrew DiBitetto (2), Jonas Enander Hedin (2), Matt Mincer, Ray Sheedy and Stefan Wiedergruen). The 49ers have had three different players win the last three A-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year in men's golf (Enander Hedin, DiBitetto and Sheedy). Eight players have been named to the five-player A-10 all academic team over the last three years.

Charlotte has posted a team GPA of 3.2 or higher in each of the last eight semesters.

The 49ers won the 2005 Conference USA Academic Award for men's golf by posting the league's best GPA. This past spring, they had a near-record team GPA of 3.452. In 2004 and 2006, the golf team won the school's CHAMPS Team Life Skills Award for outstanding participation in that NCAA enrichment program.

"I believe strong academic effort and organization breeds confidence for all areas of a college student's life," Green said. "And confidence is vital to golfers for success to occur."

In Green's first year, the 49ers were the 2004 Conference USA Runner-Up, with three 49ers in the league's top five, led by freshmen Sheedy (2nd) and Mincer (3rd). The school records began to tumble as team marks for season stroke average and tournament score were broken.

2004-05 brought another runner-up finish, two tournament titles and the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament bid (17th in NCAA East Regional). And, once again, the single-season team stroke average record fell.

In 2005-06, the 49ers broke through the glass ceiling, reaching the top 25 and advancing for the first time through the NCAA Regional to the NCAA National Championship. Charlotte grabbed four tournament titles, including the Atlantic 10 title and had top five finishes in every event leading into the National Championship. In 2006-07, the 49ers elevated the program a step further, finishing tied for 3rd at the NCAA Championships after winning another A-10 title and advancing through the NCAA Regionals. In 2007-08, the 49ers were the nation's consensus #1 team in the country, won a third straight A-10 title and advanced through the NCAA East Regional to place tied for 8th at the NCAA Championship.

Under Green, team records for a single round, tournament and single-season have all been broken, as well as individual records for single-round, tournament and single-season. The 49ers' single-season stroke average record has been bested in each of Green's five years.

A 1993 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America since 1996, Green was an assistant coach at a number of schools prior to joining the 49ers. From 1999 to 2003, Green served as the assistant men's golf coach at North Carolina under head coach John Inman.

He worked with the department's academic support center and helped North Carolina produce GCAA all-American Scholars Bob Cherry (2002) and Richard Treis (2003).

In 2003, Green was one of three finalists for the inaugural Jan Strickland GCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year Award. From 2000-03, the Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA Championship finals three times, placing 10th in 2000, 17th in `02 and ninth in `03. Dustin Bray (2002, 2003), Ramon Bescansa (2002), Max Harris (2000) and Richard Treis (2003) all received all-American honors during that time. North Carolina also produced two ACC individual champions: Treis, `03 and Bray, `02, who have both posted victories in professional events.

At Auburn, under Hall of Fame Head Coach Mike Griffin from 1997-99, Green helped the Tigers place 10th at the 1998 NCAAs and helped develop the talent of all-American Reid Edstrom and Jason Dutner, who are both on the PGA Nationwide Tour. In 1998, Auburn produced a GCAA all-American Scholar : Roland Thatcher (currently on the PGA Tour).

From 1994-present, Green has served as an instructor of junior golfers at seven different schools, academies and camps, including the Tar Heel Golf School, Duke Academy of Golf, Central Ohio Golf Academy, Jerry Haas' Wake Forest Golf Camp and Nike Junior Golf Camps. Inducted in 1997 as a Class A member of the PGA, Green was a golf pro at various golf and country clubs.

Green won three varsity letters at Ohio Wesleyan and competed in the 1992 NCAA Division III Championship. He is married to Heidi Green, M.D., of Ebensburg, Pa.
