THE GAME: The Charlotte 49ers (3-2) host unbeaten Wake Forest (4-0), at Bobcats Arena, Thursday (7:00 p.m. -- Radio: WFNA: Matt Swierad; TV: Time Warner Cable: Mike Solarte, Dave Telep). The 49ers will be playing their first-ever game at Bobcats Arena. Charlotte is 2-0 at home thus far, beating both High Point and Appalachian State at Halton Arena, to open the season.
There was a time when the 49ers regularly played home games at an NBA Arena. For five years from the 1988-89 season to the 1992-93 season, the 49ers played home games at the new Charlotte Colisem, home of the Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte had an overall record of 39-21 at the Coliseum, all under head coach Jeff Mullins. Since the debut of Halton Arena, in 1996, Charlotte has played only two other games in Charlotte away from Halton. Charlotte went 0-2 at the 1996 Harris Teeter Pepsi Challenge at the new Charlotte Coliseum, falling to South Carolina, 75-60 and Southern Cal, 65-61.
This will be the second of four Charlotte games vs. ACC opponents, this year. The 49ers lost to Georgia Tech, 82-77, at the Paradise Jam. Charlotte hosts Maryland at Bobcats Arena, Jan. 5 and plays at Clemson, Jan. 9. In Bobby Lutz's 10 years as head coach, he holds a 6-6 records against teams currently in the ACC.
Following the Wake Forest game, Charlotte hosts Davidson (Dec. 5, 7:30) and Southern Illinois (Dec. 8; 7:00) at Halton Arena. Both Davidson and SIU have been ranked in the Top 25 this year.
