Lutz Adds 6-7 Forward KJ Sherrill to 49ers Recruiting Class

49ers Bolster Frontcourt with Physical Force

Nov. 18, 2008

Halton Arena - Charlotte 49ers men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz today announced the signing of 6-7; 220 lb. forward K.J. Sherrill (Mount Ulla, N.C.; West Rowan H.S.) to a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the 49ers in 2009-10.

Sherrill, a second team all-Charlotte Observer selection as a junior, averaged 18.4 points a game as West Rowan went 21-7 and reached the sectional final. Sherrill, a cousin of former NC State player Scooter Sherrill, was named to the NCPreps 3A all-state team and was also named first team all-Piedmont Region for West Rowan head coach Mike Gurley.

He averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds while playing for the Carolina Phenoms and making the all-tournament team in the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions. Rated as the #45 power forward by ESPN.com, the site credits Sherrill's performance at the AAU Junior National Tournament in Orlando, Fla., in late July, 2008 as validating Sherrill's status as "a major college talent."

"We are excited to have KJ join our program," said Lutz. "He has had a very successful high school career and we believe he has a tremendous future with our program. He had some very good games this summer against top competition. KJ is a very physical yet skilled forward who can rebound, defend and score both inside and outside."

Sherrill joins the a 49ers recruiting class that includes 6-8 power forward Chris Braswell, a top 100 recruit out of Seat Pleasant, Md. who averaged 16.7 points and 12.0 rebounds for unbeaten Hargrave Military Academy, last year. The 49ers frontcourt is further bolstered by Shamari Spears, who transferred into the 49ers program from Boston College. A 6-6 junior from Salisbury, N.C., Spears is sitting out this season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning next season.
