Charlotte, N.C. - Former Charlotte 49ers men's basketball all-America Eddie Basden signed with the Miami Heat, the Heat announced, Friday, Sept. 26. Basden was among four guards that Miami signed.
Basden, the 2005 Conference USA Player of the Year, led Charlotte to three NCAA Tournaments during his four-year career and graduated in 2005. The 49ers all-time leader in career steals (264), Basden ranks 20th all-time in career points with 1066 and seventh all-time for the 49ers with 765 rebounds. Basden played with the Chicago Bulls during the 2005-06 season. Last year, he spent time with Cholet Basket of the French Pro A League and with Telekom Baskets Bonn of the German Bundesliga.
A two-time team co-MVP for the 49ers, Basden was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, he joined Kenyon Martin and Dwyane Wade as the only players to be named Conference USA Player of the Year and Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in the same season.
An honorable mention AP all-America, Basden teamed with fellow all-C-USA first teamer Curtis Withers to lead the 49ers to a 21-8 record -- the 49ers second straight 20-win season -- and a four week stint in the national rankings.
Basden was named National Defensive Player of the Year by ESPN's Jay Bilas and by Collegeinsider.com. He was named second team all-America by Basketball Times and third team all-America by Sports Illustrated.
Terms of the signing were not disclosed.
