Charlotte - Davidson Game Removed From Schedule

Teams Agree to Two-Year Hiatus in 30-Year Series

Aug. 30, 2008

Halton Arena - Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose has announced that the Charlotte 49ers men's basketball game with Davidson has been taken off the 2008-09 schedule due to schedule conflicts.

"We were made aware that the Dec. 13 date would not work for Davidson due to their matchup with Chattanooga," said Rose. "We made efforts to work through that issue but they proved unsuccessful."

"We know this series is important both to the Davidson fans and Charlotte fans alike, and it brings national attention to two outstanding men's basketball programs," Rose said. "We look forward to resuming the rivalry in 2010."

The two teams will take the next two seasons off and resume a home-and-home series, in 2010-11. In December, 2010 the 49ers will play at Davidson. In December, 2011, the 49ers will host Davidson at Halton Arena. Games are slated to be played on the same Saturday in December, each year.

To fill the hole left by the Davidson game, Charlotte reached a verbal agreement this weekend with Mississippi State to play Dec. 10 in Starkville, Miss.

The 49ers have played Davidson in each of the last 30 years and own a 26-10 lead in series play. After the first year of play in 1978-79, one game each season was denoted as the Hornet's Nest game, giving the victor the Hornet's Nest Trophy and bragging rights as the Champion of Mecklenburg County. Charlotte owns a 20-9 record in Hornet's Nest games.

Charlotte won last year's Hornet's Nest game, 75-68 in a memorable contest at Halton Arena. Charlotte's Leemire Goldwire (34 points) outdueled Davidson's Stephen Curry (32 points) in the elite back-and-forth battle. Goldwire hit three three-pointers to break open a tie game in the final minutes as Charlotte pulled away. Head coach Bobby Lutz owns an 8-2 record versus the Wildcats.
