Toronto, Canada - Men's Basketball Canada Trip Blog: Tom Whitestone, SID

Sept. 1, 2008 Charlotte 109, Sheridan 55

Junior shooting guard Ian Andersen led six players in double-figures as Charlotte raced past Sheridan College, 109-55, in the finale of the 49ers 2008 preseason Canadian Tour. Charlotte finished the three-game weekend with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents by an average of 49.0 points.

Andersen hit his first three three-point attempts to push Charlotte to an early 13-3 lead and the Niners never looked back. Charlotte led 58-19 at the half.

Junior Phil Jones scored 15 points with 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Red-shirt freshman Javarris Barnett scored 12 points with 11 rebounds, sophomore An'Juan Wilderness added 12 points and nine boards and seniors Charlie Coley (11 points) and Lamont Mack (10 points) both hit double-figures despite limited playing time in the second half.

"I'm really happy with the first half," said 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz. "Our defense was excellent and we shared the ball well. I was really pleased with our pressing and we mixed up defenses really well. The second half was not as sharp but I'm still pleased overall with what we did in the second half."

In the 49ers three games, they were led in scoring by three different players: Charlie Coley vs. Toronto with 15 points, Shamarr Bowden vs. York with 21 and Andersen vs. Sheridan with 18. At least 10 different players scored in all three games. Eight different players scored in double figures at least once. Charlotte forced 73 turnovers in the three games, an average of 24.3 per game and collected 43 steals, an average of 14.3 per game. Junior DiJuan Harris averaged 5.0 steals in the three games.

"We wanted to look at a lot of different lineups and give guys a lot of minutes, and we accomplished that," Lutz said of his goals for the trip. "Everybody got significant playing time. We saw some things that we weill work on that will make us better, but the togetherness of the team, the unselfishness and the fact that they play hard was the main key. This team is a lot of fun to watch and I'm excited about the season."

The 49ers scored an average of 106.7 points in the Canadian Tour.

Charlotte 123 York 59: Six 49ers scored in double figures, including freshman shooting guard Shamarr Bowden, as Charlotte rolled past York, 123-59. Bowden hit 8-of-9 shots, including 5-of-6 three-pointers to lead all scorers. Sophomore An'Juan Wilderness had 19 points, Michael Gerrity added 15 on 6-of-7 shooting and Phil Jones added a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Charlie Coley (13 points) and Javarris Barnett (13 points) also scored in double figures for the 49ers.

"You play hard and good things happen," head coach Bobby Lutz told the team afterwards. "Our defense was really good and disruptive. We showed the depth I think we have and it was great for all those guys to get playing time."

All 11 players scored while the defense forced 30 turnovers with 17 steals. Offensively, Charlotte shot 55% from the field while holding the Lions to .304 shooting.

"The competition is not what it will be like in conference, but the aggressiveness and unselfishness of the whole team, I'm pleased with that," Lutz added.

Charlotte scored the first 11 points of the game and led by 41, 68-27, at the half.

Bowden led a perimeter attack that hit 10-of-24 shots from long-range (.417). The Niners controlled the boards, 53-30.

In two games, Charlotte has come up with 34 steals and forced 53 turnovers.

Charlotte wraps up the three-game tour vs. sheridan College, Monday at 11:00 a.m.

Things you like to see:
Charlie Coley diving into the visitor's bench after a loose ball -- with charlotte leading by 57 in the fourth quarter ...

... Junior transfer Rashad Coleman getting water for the guys coming off the court and yelling, "Who's got shooter?" every time York went to the line -- while wearing street clothes and sitting behind the bench. Nice to see him excited and involved despite the ankle injury that's keeping him on the sidelines ...

... the many nice looks inside to Phil Jones, Charlie Coley, An'Juan Wilderness and Lamont Mack, in particular ...

... Javarris Barnett banging the board for eight rebounds ...

... Phil Jones scrambling on the floor to corral a rebound ...

... the niners ever-active defense that had 34 steals in two games, led by Dijuan Harris who has 12 steals in two games (7 vs. Toronto; 5 vs. York) ...

... Charles Dewhurst attacking the basket. An'Juan Wilderness attacking the basket (he hit 6-of-9 shots and got to the line 10 times: 7-of-10).

Sun., 8/31: The highlight of the trip, in non-basketball terms, was today's trip to Niagara Falls and the ride on the Maid of the Mist boat tour that takes you to the base of the falls. The whole crew went along, donned royal blue rain gear and enjoyed the trip beneath the powerful falls. Photos were taken with the team at stops along the bus tour of Niagara Falls as well, including a stop at the second largest Floral Clock in the world (40 foot diameter), and above a whirlpool gorge, where the water racing from the falls is forced to make a sharp turn and in doing so creates a whirlpool effect.

We hope to add a photo gallery from the tour of Niagara Falls to this site so you, too, can see the great wonder.

... in other news, Phil Jones was feeling a little under the weather today, but he really wanted to make the trip to the falls. The day was beautiful for such a trip and the mist, which at times felt more like a summer storm, was refreshing. Phil, who was the first player to hit the court last night for pregame warm-ups, seemed none the worse for wear following the trip and mentionned feeling better during the tour.

... Charlie Coley, a high-flyer in his own right, asked our tour guide about the daredevils that have tried to go over the falls -- surprisingly, many have survived the great fall. Most impressive of those stories was a tale of a seven-year old boy whose boat had capsized up the river over 40 years ago. He went over the falls with nothing except his life jacket ... and miraculously survived, being pulled aboard a Maid of the Mist boat beneath the falls.

... of note on this trip, due to international rates, cell phone use is down among the team members, which basically means that Ipod use is up.

... the team returned from the Falls in time for the pre-game meal and then had a small bit of time to relax before hopping aboard the bus, again, to head to York for tonight's game.

Sat. night, 8/30: Senior Charlie Coley scored a team-high 15 points with six rebounds as the 49ers used a balanced attack to dismantle Toronto, 88-59. Ten 49ers hit the scoring column, including freshman Shamarr Bowden, who finished with 13 points and Charles Dewhurst, who added a 12-point; 10-rebound double-double.

Junior Dijuan Harris, though, may have copped Player of the Game honors, what with his nine points, seven assists and seven steals.

Harris keyed a defense that forced 23 turnovers on 17 steals. Toronto shot just .324 from the field.

"I'm extremely pleased with our effort and energy and unselfishness," said head coach Bobby Lutz. "Our execution, overall, was pretty good. That's an area where we have some room to improve. But, to play that fast with only nine turnovers is pretty good."

The two teams were knotted 15-15 after the first quarter, but Charlotte used a 22-9 second quarter to open the game up, 37-24 at the half. During the second quarter, Toronto hit just 4-of-18 shots (.222). Meanhile, Bowden opened the frame with a pair of three-pointers as Charlotte scored the first 10 points of the quarter.

The teams put up more offense in the third quarter as Charlotte extended the lead slightly, 63-47, heading into the final quarter. Charlotte outscored Toronto, 25-12 in the last quarter to put the game out of reach.

Of note, red-shirt freshman Javarris Barnett had seven points and four rebounds in 19 quality minutes. Phil Jones added eight points, four rebounds and three blocks in 17 minutes and Michael Gerrity scored eight points with five assists, including a patented alley-oop to Coley, in 13 minutes of play.

Sat, 8/30: An easy Saturday morning in Toronto. Weather is beautiful: Sunny and 20-25 degrees celsius (which converts to about 68-77) The hotel overlooks Lake Ontario, making for a picturesque view. The harbour is busy with sail boats, ferry rides and a small but busy landing strip just down the shore. Toronto is on the northwestern side of Lake Ontario, further west, for instance, than Buffalo, N.Y., which sits on the eastern coast of Lake Erie.

... last night, players walked the streets of Toronto, a pedestrian-oriented city similar to Boston and New York in that way. Some players wandered to Rogers Centre, formerly known as Skydome, where the Toronto Blue Jays play, and past the impressive CN Tower (think "space needle") that stands next to it. Ian Andersen is able to check out the the Air Canada Center, home of the Toronto Raptors, from his hotel room. It, too, is a short walk and oddly it is a gutted postal service building, that looks nothing like an athletic venue from the outside.

... a team breakfast at 10:00 a.m. preceded a noon shootaround at nearby Ryerson University. One focus of the shootaround was an emphasis on international rules differences, which include a 24-second shot clock, an eight-second backcourt violation and a goaltending rule that allows players to touch the ball above the rim, as long as it has already hit the rim (think Charlie Coley will like that rule?).

.... Rashad Coleman received treatment on his sprained right ankle during shootaround, and trainer Carlton Anderson was pleased that the swelling had reduced considerably.

... FYI -- NC State's hoop team is using in the same hotel as home base for their own Canadian Tour ...

... ESPN is "TSN" in Canada and a version of SportsCentre is available, but it gives much more pub to NHL signings, trades and deals than you get from the American version ...

... The team will leave for tonight's 7:00 p.m. game at the University of Toronto around 5:15. It will be nice to get the first look at this year's edition.

Fri, 8/29: The 49ers wrapped up practice early, Friday, before heading to the airport ... and here's a taste of some of the goings-on of "Canada, Day 1" ...

... Red-shirt freshman Javarris Barnett, in typical back-to-school fashion, displayed a "Batman" book bag at the airport. Strength coach Preston Greene was not dismayed by the seemingly grade-school look -- because this is not your child's "Batman" bookbag. It's black, brown and strong. Greene likes the confidence Barnett shows in carrying it. And after working with Barnett for the past season, Greene vows Barnett now has the body armor to back it up ...

... Chalk one up for "being prepared": Freshman manager Steve Doughton luckily happened upon the trip. He was not scheduled to head to Canada, originally, but when manager Jon Cain injured his knee the week before the trip, a spot opened up. Because Doughton already had a valid passport he gained the spot ...

... How's your French? A common topic since Canada has its share of French heritage and characteristics. Junior Ian Andersen, though, now has his share as well. Newlywed Andersen and his wife, the former Jill DeBusk, honeymooned in France earlier in August ...

... at Wednesday's practice at Belk Gym, this week, junior Dijuan Harris was sporting a retro Montreal Expos ballcap -- sweet lid -- especially to those of us who remember Warren Cromartie, Ellis Valentine and a young Andre Dawson ...

... All did not run completely smoothly for the 49ers -- sophomore Gaby Ngoundjo, a native of Cameroon, almost expectedly, had issues getting through customs -- he was held back for a spell but he finally made it ...

... No practice in Toronto, Friday night as the team gets settled into the hotel. With three games in three days, the Niners will need their rest, anyway. As for the games, Charlotte faces the University of Toronto, Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Head coach Bobby Lutz had not settled on a starting lineup but figured a veteran lineup of guards Dijuan Harris and Ian Andersen, wing An'Juan Wilderness and forwards Charlie Coley and Lamont Mack was as "probable" as any other.
