Shamari Spears To Join 49ers Basketball Program

6-6 Forward Averaged 9.6 Points; 6.1 Rebounds For Boston College

April 23, 2008

Halton Arena - Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz has anounced that 6-6 forward Shamari Spears (Salisbury, N.C.) will transfer into the 49ers program from Boston College. Spears, who was the third-leading scorer for the Eagles as a sophomore last year, averaged 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds.

"We are happy to have Shamari come home and join our program," said Lutz. "He is a low-post scorer who also has developed the ability to face the basket. Shamari's statistics illustrate that he can be very productive against excellent competition and we are fortunate that he wanted to move back closer to his family. I look forward to coaching him over the next couple of years."

At Boston College, Spears averaged 26.9 minutes and started in 17 of 28 games played as a sophomore. He shot .493 from the field and .716 from the foul line and was second on the team with 88 free throw attempts. In Atlantic Coast Conference play, Spears averaged 8.4 points and 4.5 rebounds in 23.6 minutes of play. He shot .494 from the floor in ACC action. Spears averaged 21.6 minutes as a freshman, averaging 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Spears scored in double figures 15 times as a sophomore, with four double-doubles, including a 13-point, 11 rebound effort at Virginia. As a freshman, Spears scored in double figures 10 times with two double-doubles. He scored a career-high 23 points vs. New Hampshire in his freshman season, hitting 8-of-10 shots and 7-of-11 free throws.

A native of Salisbury, N.C., Spears attended Salisbury High for two years before enrolling at Blair Academy, where he finished with over 2000 points in three seasons. He scored 55 points in a game for Salisbury High. He finished second on Blair Academy's all-time scoring list behind Luol Deng. He averaged 26.0 points and 10.0 rebounds for Blair in 2005-06 and 25.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in 2004-05.

Spears joins a 49ers 2008-09 recruiting class that includes 6-3 freshman shooting guard Shamarr Bowden (Greensboro, N.C.) and 6-5 junior wing Rashad Coleman (LaGrange, Ga.). Bowden signed with the 49ers in the fall and averaged 17.0 points as a senior at the Miller School (Charlottesville, Va.). Coleman, who signed last week, averaged 26.0 points and 6.2 rebounds at the Heat Academy (Martinsville, Va.). As an NCAA transfer, Spears will sit out the 2008-09 season and have two years of eligibility remaining.
