Halton Arena - Charlotte 49ers head men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz has announced the signing of Javarris Barnett (Charlotte, N.C.) and Lamont Mack (Chicago, Ill.) to National Letters of Intent and Grant-In Aid Scholarships for the 2007-08 basketball season. Barnett is a 6-5 wing from Charlotte's Victory Christian High School while Mack is a 6-7 junior college forward out of Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas.
Barnett, a 6-5, 200 lb. guard who averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 rebounds at Victory Christian, follows a long-line of Charlotte natives who have gone on to excel for the 49ers: including conference Players of the Year Byron Dinkins and DeMarco Johnson, all-time three-point king Jobey Thomas, three-time first-team all-league selection Curtis Withers and, most recently, E.J. Drayton, who ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in rebounding, last year. Barnett will join fellow Charlottean Charles Dewhurst on the 2007-08 squad.
A first-team all-state choice, Barnett helped Victory Christian to the N.C. Independent Schools State Title as well as the National Association of Christian Athletes National Championship. Head coach Mike Pratt's squad was rated as the number one team in the Charlotte Observer's Sweet 16. Barnett was an all-tournament choice at the National Championship and was chosen all-tournament at the Dell Curry Shootout.
"Javarris has the tools to become an excellent two-guard for us and has the size to play small forward over time," said Lutz. "He is a very good shooter and passer and as he develops strength will contribute to our success. Javarris comes from a winning program at Victory Christian and we are always happy to attract top area players, like him."
Dave Telep, of ScoutHoops.com, described Barnett as "a late-blooming wing shooter", adding "at 6-5 he's got the frame, the stroke and all he needs is game experience to make another leap in his abilities."
Barnett began to grab attention with his performance in December's Bojangles Shootout, nailing a series of three-pointers and he continued to be a key in Victory Christian's state and national championship drives.
Mack, a 6-7, 230 lb. junior college all-America who attended high school in St. Paul, Minn., averaged 16.5 points and seven rebounds while shooting .420 from three-point range and .740 from the foul line for head coach Guy Davis. Ranked as the 21st-best junior college player by JucoJunction.com, Mack was a first team all-Texas Junior College selection.
"Lamont is a talented forward with the ability to score in the post or facing the basket," said Lutz. "He has a great attitude and desire to improve and he will make us better in many ways. Lamont is versatile and will have a huge impact on our team. He finds a way to help his team win at both ends of the floor."
"Lamont is one of the top 10 junior college players in America and has the ability to play at any level," said Mike Mitchell of Midwest Scouting Report. "He's a very versatile forward who can play inside or out and plays very strong around the basket. He's a perfect four-man for Charlotte who can also play some three. The 49ers stole one, as Lamont was being recruited by the SEC and Big 12 as well as other BCS conferences."
Barnett and Mack join fall signees 6-7 Gaby Ngoundjo and 6-6 An'Juan Wilderness in the 49ers 2007-08 recruiting class. Charlotte will also add Phil Jones to the roster in 2007-08. Jones, who attends UNC Charlotte after signing last summer, was ineligible this past season. Pepperdine transfer Mike Gerrity, who joined the team in the spring semester, will become eligible at the conclusion of the fall semester in accordance with NCAA rules on Division I transfers.
