Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz, today, announced that 6-8 junior center Tory Reed (Cleveland, Ohio) and 6-8 freshman center/forward Tyler Best (Lafayette, Ind.) have decided to transfer. Reed wants to return closer to home to attend to family needs while Best cited a desire for increased playing time.
"I appreciate the effort Tory Reed has given us for three seasons," Lutz said. "He was a very good team player this year and added alot to our team. While we all sometimes think basketball is what its all about there are obviously things that are more important and Tory's family situation dictates that he needs to be closer to home."
Reed, the 49ers starting center for much of the season, averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting .419 from the floor. Averaging 17.8 minutes per game, Reed scored in double figures three times, including a 13-point performance at Cincinnati. He added an 11-point; nine rebound outing against #19 Louisville.
In his three-year career, Reed played in 77 games, averaging 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds while shooting .480 from the floor.
"I have enjoyed the opportunity to be at Charlotte for three years and have grown on and off the court," Reed said. "There comes a time when family is more important. As a father, I need to be closer to my daughter. In an effort to do that, I feel it is in my family's best interest for me to get closer to home."
Best averaged 0.9 points and 0.8 rebounds in 6.1 minutes of play, last season. He played in 18 games, making two starts, with a high of 19 minutes in a start vs. Loyola-Chicago. He played double-digit minutes in four games. He had a career-high three points vs. Southern Illinois and in the C-USA Tournament vs. UAB. He had a high of two rebounds, four times.
"We wish Tyler the very best in his endeavors to find the right place," Lutz said. "Unfortunately, he had injuries which slowed his progress during the early part of the season. We still know that he is going to be a very good player."
"The main reason I decided to transfer is I'm looking for a place to go and earn more playing time," Best said. "I felt like I would have a hard time getting the playing time here. I met alot of good friends and had a good time here and have nothing bad to say about Charlotte. I would highly recommend it to others coming here."
