Charlotte Senior Jobey Thomas Named Verizon Academic All-America

Sharp-Shooting Guard Boasts 3.53 GPA; 19.4 Scoring Average; Earn Niners 10th Award

March 7, 2002

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers senior guard Jobey Thomas (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named Verizon Academic all-America Second Team. Thomas, who owns a 3.53 cumulative GPA as a communications major, leads the 49ers with a 19.4 scoring average.

Thomas, a first-team all-Conference USA selection who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, last semester (Fall, 2001), is both Charlotte's and Conference USA's career record-holder for three-pointers made. He has also set the C-USA record for threes in a season (102) and is within three treys of the 49ers single season record of 105, held by Henry Williams.

Thomas, who spent two-and-a-half months this past summer working with an inner-city mission project before leading the NIT All-Stars on a tour of Europe, becomes the first academic all-America in 49ers basketball history. This marks the 10th Academic all-America award for a 49er student-athlete. He is the second player in Conference USA men's basketball history to earn Academic All-America honors (Neil Reed, Southern Miss).

Thomas has scored over 1700 points in his four-year career to rank seventh all-time in school history and fifth all-time in C-USA history. He has helped the 49ers to two C-USA Championships and two NCAA Tournament berths.

This season he averaged 20.4 point in C-USA games and led the league in three-pointers made, three-point pct, and free throw pct. as the 49ers put together an 11-5 l,eague record.

The 49ers are 17-10, overall, and play Tulane in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament, tonight at 9:30 p.m.
