Greenville, N.C. -
at East Carolina (Feb. 22; 7:00 -- WFNZ 610 AM; WAXN): The 49ers travel to East Carolina in search of just their second road win of the year. The 49ers have lost five straight on the road, but have won 2 of the last 3 overall. Charlotte is 7-4 all-time vs. ECU, winning all three games since the Pirates joined Conference USA. Charlotte won the season's earlier meeting, 83-62, at Halton Arena. The 49ers topped ECU last year in Greenville, 84-75. Bobby Lutz is 3-0 all-time vs. the Pirates and Charlotte is 3-2 all-time in Greenville.
Brown Leads Nation in Three-Pointers: Junior guard Demon Brown leads the nation in three-pointers made per game (118; 5.13/gm) and is shooting a career-best .408 from long-range. He has broken the 49ers and C-USA's single-season record for threes, set last season (110, Jobey Thomas). He broke the 49ers single-game school record (shared by Brown; Diego Guevara and Henry Williams) with nine threes at UAB on his way to a career-high 32 points. Of note, the NCAA record for threes in a season is 158 (5.64/gm) by Darrin Fitzgerald of Butler in 1987. Fitzgerald is the only player in NCAA Div. I history to average at least 5.0 threes per game over an entire season.
What Can Brown Do For You?: Junior guard Demon Brown has scored 20 or more points in seven of the last 11 games and 11 games overall. He's 3rd in C-USA with an 18.3 scoring average that improves to a league-leading 20.2 points in C-USA play. He has scored 15 or more points in 18 games and has scored in double figures in all but two games (0-2). Brown is 2nd on the team with 31 steals. He became the 18th player in 49ers history to score 1000 career points when he scored 22 at Cincinnati. With 247 career threes, Brown is #3 all-time for the 49ers, behind Thomas and Williams and #2 all-time in C-USA, tied with Cincinnati's Steve Logan and trailing all-time leader Jobey Thomas.
Those Fantastic Freshmen: Freshman Curtis Withers posted his third double-double of the year vs. Houston with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He's second on the team with 9.8 points and 6.4 rebounds and improves to 10.5 and 7.0 in C-USA play. He adds 31 steals and has had 12 games in double figures. Withers leads C-USA freshmen in rebounding.
Explosive swing Vincent Grier is shooting .535 from the floor with 10 dunks. He scored 10 points with six rebounds in back-to-back wins vs. Houston and Cincinnati and has enjoyed four double-figure games, this year. With 30 steals, he is a defensive threat and his athleticism can make for a highlight-film type air show.
Red-shirt freshman point Mitchell Baldwin, leads C-USA in A-TO ratio in league games (3.08; 37 asts; 12 to). The speedster is shooting .453 with a team-high 7 charges taken and 24 steals.
