Charlotte has won the last two meetings, including last year's contest, 67-62, in Louisiana. Charlotte also won, 84-68, Dec. 1, 2004 at Halton Arena. The Ragin' Cajuns have visited Halton Arena twice, beating the 49ers in the first trip, 68-47, in the 2002 Pepsi Classic. All three meetings have come in the last five years.
Next Game: Charlotte begins a three-game road swing, Sat., Feb. 17 at Rhode Island. The 49ers also travel to Duquesne (Wec., Feb. 21) and Temple (Sat., Feb. 24) next week.
The Game: The Charlotte 49ers (11-12; 5-6), winners of three of four, step out of conference play to host UL-Lafayette, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Charlotte has won its last two games and could match their longest win streak of the year with a victory Tuesday. Charlotte knocked off Fordham, Saturday, 72-68, as senior De'Angelo Alexander exploded for 35 points -- the most scored by a player in the A-10 this year. Alexander hit 12-of-20 shots, including 6-of-9 three-pointers. Alexander improved his season average to 17.8 points per game -- 3rd in the A-10.
Alexander's Special Game: De'Angelo Alexander's 35-point game vs. Fordham is the highest scoring effort by a player in the A-10 this year. He also joins Curtis Withers (39 pts. at Saint Louis, Feb. 12, 2005) as the only 49ers to score 35 or more since 1991 (Henry Williams, 35 vs. Chaminade, Dec. 22, 1991).
Triple Threat: In Charlotte's last three wins, a different player has scored at least 25 points to lead the way. E.J. Drayton scored a career-high 26 points in the 49ers 87-80 win over La Salle. Against Richmond, Leemire Goldwire scored 25 points and Saturday, vs. Fordham, Alexander netted 35.
Alexander; Goldwire Close In on 1000-Point Club: De'Angelo Alexander and Leemire Goldwire are both closing in on 1000 career points. Alexander has scored 955 career points while Goldwire has scored 926. They would be the 21st and 22nd players in school history to reach the plateau and the first to do so since Curtis Withers and Eddie Basden joined the club in 2005. Alexander would be the fifth 49er to reach 1000 in just two years, joining Henry Williams, Lew Massey, Robert Earl Blue and George Jackson.
Drayton Doubling Up: E.J. Drayton, who has four double-doubles in A-10 play, has posted seven double-doubles, including three in the last four games:
Fordham: 13 pts; 10 rebs (on a sore knee)
La Salle: 26 pts; 11 rebs (7-of-7 fg; 12-of-15 ft)
UMass: 16 pts; 13 rebs (vs. Freeman; Lasme)
Drayton's double-double against two of the A-10's premier big men (Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme) was only the second double-double yielded by UMass, this year. The 13 rebounds matched his career-high set in the first two games, this season. Drayton (13.6 ppg) has scored in double figures 20 times with at least 8 rebounds 17 times.
ICE, ICE, Baby: Leemire Goldwire, who ranks 2nd in the A-10 with a .895 FT%, is especially good in the clutch:
vs. Hofstra: 10-10 FT in final 67 seconds
vs. La Salle: 6-6 FT in final 31 seconds
vs. Fordham: 8-8 FT in final 44 seconds
His perfect 10's (or more), this year:
12-of-12 vs. Hofstra
10-of-10 vs. La Salle
Shooting Stars: Leemire Goldwire (186; 6th all-time) and De'Angelo Alexander (155; 9th all-time) are both among the 49ers all-time Top 10 in three-pointers made. Goldwire needs 25 to tie Brendan Plavich (211) for fifth all-time. Alexander needs 7 to tie Roderick Howard (162) for 8th-place.
Love February: Charlotte is 15-3 in the month of February over the last 3 years.
2004-05: 7-0 Basden & Withers led charge
2005-06: 6-2 6-1 in A-10 play
2006-07: 2-1
Total 15-3
Halton's home: Charlotte has won 78% (111-31) of its games at Halton Arena, the 49ers home for 11 years. They are 8-3 at home this year.
Odds and Ends: Jerell Jamison (3.9 rebs/gm) is third on the team in rebounding. He pulls 5.2 rebounds in A-10 play ... Leemire Goldwire's .895 free throw pct. ranks 5th all-time for the 49ers and is the best since Jobey Thomas shot .899 from the line in 2002.
