GAME NOTES: Charlotte Hosts Fordham in Homecoming Game

Goldwire Helps Niners Past Richmond With Seven Threes

Charlotte won last year's meeting, 81-75, at Fordham and defeated the Rams, 89-75, on their way to the championship of NC State's CoSIDA Classic in 2000. In last year's game, Marcus Bennett came off the bench to score a career-best 29 points (7-10 3FG) and Curtis Withers added a 15-point; 12-rebound double-double. Bobby Lutz is 2-0 vs. the Rams.

The Game: The Charlotte 49ers (10-12; 4-6) host Fordham (13-9; 6-4) in the school's annual Homecoming Game. This will be the Rams first-ever trip to Halton Arena. The 49ers are coming off a 61-46 victory over Richmond. The 46 points allowed are the fewest allowed by the 49ers this year. Charlotte shot 70% from the field in the seceond half to assert control. Leemire Goldwire led the 49ers, scoring 25 points and hitting 7-of-10 three-pointers, including 4-of-5 long-rangers in the second half.

Next Game: Charlotte steps out of conference play to host UL-Lafayette, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Charlotte is 2-1 vs. the Ragin' Cajuns under Lutz, including last year's 67-62 win in Louisiana. The 49ers will play its next three A-10 games on the road.

Alexander; Goldwire Close In on 1000-Point Club: De'Angelo Alexander and Leemire Goldwire are both closing in on 1000 career points. Alexander has scored 920 career points while Goldwire has scored 913. They would be the 21st and 22nd players in school history to reach the plateau and the first to do so since Curtis Withers and Eddie Basden joined the club in 2005. Alexander would be the fifth 49er to reach 1000 in just two years, joining Henry Williams, Lew Massey, Robert Earl Blue and George Jackson.

Hitting the Boards: Charlotte enjoyed a +24 rebounding advantage in Wednesday's win over Richmond, its largest rebounding margin of the year. Charlotte is 3rd in the A-10 in rebounding (36.3/gm) and 3rd in the A-10 in rebounding margin (+3.3). E.J. Drayton, who had 10 boards vs. Richmond, is second in the A-10 with 8.9 rebounds per game. Jerell Jamison came off the bench to grab a career-high 10 rebounds, as well. Charlotte has enjoyed a double-digit rebounding margin six times this year.

Drayton Doubling Up: E.J. Drayton has posted six double-doubles, including three in A-10 games. He has posted two in the last four games: vs. La Salle, Drayton hit 7-of-7 shots; and 12-of-15 free throws for a career-high 26 points with 11 rebounds. Against UMass, going up against two of the league's premier big men (Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme), Drayton posted a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds -- only the second double-double yielded by the Minutemen this year. The 13 rebounds matched his career-high set in the first two games, this season. Drayton (13.6 ppg) has scored in double figures 19 times with at least 8 rebounds 16 times.

Shooting Stars: Leemire Goldwire (185; 6th all-time) and De'Angelo Alexander (149; 9th all-time) are both within the 49ers all-time Top 10 in three-pointers made. Goldwire needs 26 to tie Brendan Plavich (211) for fifth all-time. Alexander needs 13 to tie Roderick Howard (162) for 8th-place all-time.

Role Call: Charlotte's role players have been making a greater impact of late. Antwon Coleman and Jerell Jamison, in particular, have been giving the 49ers solid minutes. Over the last six games, Coleman is averaging 7.5 points and shooting .488 from the field (21-of-43). He posted his two double-digit scoring nights (13 vs. George Washington; 10 vs. UMass) in that span. Jamison, who pulled a career-high 10 rebounds against Richmond, has scored 39 points in 10 A-10 games (12 pts in the 7 non-conference games he played in). He has added 5.1 rebounds in A-10 play, shooting 50% FG.

Alexander High Scorer: Wooden Award National Player of the Year and Lowe's Senior CLASS candidate De'Angelo Alexander, the 49ers leading scorer last season, has scored 20 or more points nine times and leads the team with an 17.0 scoring average - 4th-best in the A-10. The last two players to lead the 49ers in scoring in back-to-back seasons were Curtis Withers (`04 & `05) and DeMarco Johnson (`96, `97, & `98).
