Withers Named A-10 Player of the Week

Senior Power Forward is Third 49er To Be Honored This Year

Feb. 5, 2006

Halton Arena - Charlotte 49ers senior power forward Curtis Withers (Charlotte, NC.; West Charlotte H.S.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, for the week ending Feb.4. Withers posted back-to-back double-doubles, including a jaw-dropping 23-point; 21-rebound performance vs. Dayton, to win his first weekly award, this year.

Withers averaged 21.5 points and 18.0 rebounds while shooting .548 in a pair of wins for Charlotte. He started the week with an impressive 20-point; 15-rebound effort in the 49ers win at St. Bonaventure, adding a career-high five assists. At home on Saturday for the 49ers annual Homecoming Game, Withers delivered 23 points with a career-best 21 rebounds as Charlotte downed Dayton. Withers had 16 points and 11 rebounds in the decisive second half as Charlotte rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit.

The 21 rebounds are the most in the A-10 this year and tie for 4th-most all-time in Atlantic 10 history. They are also the most turned in by a 49er in 16 years (Cedric Ball, 22 rebounds vs. South Florida, Jan. 4, 1990). He becomes the first 49er to record a 20-20 game in the 10-year history of Halton Arena.

With two double-doubles on the week, Withers now has 12 double-doubles, which leads the Atlantic 10 Conference. He has six double-doubles in league play. His 40 career double-doubles rank third all-time and he is one of only three 49ers in school history to reach 40 double-doubles.

In the win over Dayton, Withers also pulled down his 900th career rebound, becoming the fourth 49er to reach 900 boards and he cracked the 49ers all-time Top 10 in scoring. With 1571 career points, Withers passed Demon Brown for 10th-place.

Withers leads the A-10 with an 11.2 rebounding average. He pulls down 12.3 rebounds in league play.

The award is Withers' first in the Atlantic 10 Conference and gives him at least one conference Player of the Week Award in each of the last three seasons. He won one weekly award last year and two as a sophomore in Conference USA.

Withers is the third 49er to win an A-10 Award this year. Sophomore guard Leemire Goldwire (back-to-back 20-point efforts in wins vs. Rhode Island and at Dayton) and junior guard De'Angelo Alexander (32-point effort vs. Valparaiso) have also been honored, this season.
