El Paso, Texas - Sophomore guard Demon Brown posted a career performance to lead the Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team past UTEP, 94-81, Wednesday night at the Don Haskins Center.
Brown finished with a career-best 28 points on 9-15 shooting and added eight assists and five steals, also both career-highs. In the first half, Brown led the charge as the 49ers raced to a 23-point lead. Brown hit 7-of-8 field goals, all three of his three-point attempts, for 17 points and added four assists and three steals. They ran to a 9-0 start and then pushed it up to 20-5. By the 9:00 minute mark, the lead peaked at 23 before settling in to a 21-point halftime lead, 53-32.
In the second half, the lead reached 27, 68-41, at 14:53, before UTEP mounted a charge that would get them as close as 12 points (90-78 @ 00:59). They could never close the margin within single digits.
For the 49ers, the .629 shooting in the first half was their best first-half performance of the year. Likewise, the 53 first half points were the most the 49ers have scored in a half this season. The 49ers scored over 90 points for the fourth time this year, but the first time in the last four games. The 94 points are the most an opponent has scored in the Haskins Center.
All seven of the 49ers wins have come by double figures, but the 13-point margin is the 49ers smallest margin of victory this year. The Niners canned double-digit threes (10) for the seventh time this year.
Junior Cam Stephens notched his third double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) while five 49ers scored in double figures. Joining Brown and Stephens with double-digit points were James Zimmerman (15, 6-10 FG), Rodney White (15) and Jobey Thomas (13, 6-10 FG).
