Anaheim, Ca. - The Charlotte 49ers frustrations continued at the 76 Classic, as Charlotte dropped a 67-62 decision to Providence. The 49ers (1-5) led by 10 at the half and still led by five when An'Juan Wilderness tipped in a miss with 3:21 to play. Those were the final points the 49ers would score, however, as Providence scored the final 10 points to escape with the victory.
The 49ers fifth straight loss will pit Charlotte against Cal-State Fullerton, Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The last time Charlotte lost five in a row was in January of 1989. That squad rallied with wins in its next six straight games and went on to earn an appearance in the NIT.
The 49ers jumped out with a strong opening frame. Junior RaShad Coleman scored all 19 of his points in the opening frame, nailing 3-of-4 three-pointers and 8-of-10 field goals. It is the most points scored by a 49er in the first half this season. Ian Andersen had scored 15 in the first half against Clemson.
Senior Lamont Mack scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half to join Coleman in double figures.
Junior DiJuan Harris passed out 10 assists for the second time this season and added five steals and six rebounds.
Much like its home loss to Clemson, Charlotte shot better from the floor, better from three-point range and won the battle of the boards against Providence. The 49ers did, however, commit 21 turnovers, including four in their final six possessions.
