Charlotte, N.C. - Freshman Rodney White received rave reviews in his long-awaited debut with the 49ers. White scored 18 first half points on his way to a game-high 22 to lead Charlotte past the Global All-Stars, 106-89, in the 49ers first preseason exhibition game.
The 6-9 White shot 9-of-15 from the field, hit a three-pointer and pulled down nine rebounds and blocked two shots. White hit his first three shots as the 49ers jumped to a 51-38 halftime lead.
Junior Jobey Thomas, who led the 49ers in scoring, last year, scored 21 points, nailing 5-of-9 three point attempts.
Senior do-it-all James Zimmerman added 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and no turnovers and came up big when the All-Stars closed the gap in the second-half. The All-Stars hit three three-pointers and added a pair of free throws to get within six, 83-77, but Zimmerman scored seven of his 17 points down the stretch and freshman Kevin "Butter" Johnson added four crucial free throws and hit a three-pointer as the Niners pulled away.
James Cotton led the All-Stars with 22 points, including 10 during the 1:31 minute stretch in which they rallied from 15 down to within six.
Sophomore point guard Demon Brown also scored in double-figures for the 49ers, netting 17 points with nine assists.
Senior point guard Diego Guevara played just 14 minutes while nursing a groin injury.
The 49ers host BC-Venspils of Latvia, in an exhibition game Sat., Nov. 11 at 7:30.
