Halton Arena - Sophomore forward Eddie Basden, long the unsung hero who leads the 49ers in rebounds and steals, scored a career-high 19 points with a team-high nine rebounds as Charlotte toppled Southern Miss 77-68. Senior Curtis Nash added 15 and junior Demon Brown, stifled for much of the evening, hit two big threes in the final 2:30 to finish with 13 points.
With the 49ers holding a slight, 60-57, lead, Brown stole the ball on the baseline, raced up court and popped a three from the top of the key. After a Mario Myles bucket, Brown drained a three from the right wing to give Charlotte a 66-59 cushion with 2:20 left to play. A highlight reel dunk by freshman Vincent Grier made it 68-59 at 1:23 as the 49ers put away the tight contest.
The 49ers biggest lead prior to that run had been seven, 40-33, early in the second half.
Charlotte went 0-for-8 with three turnovers in their first eight possessions to trail by 7, 7-0, which was the biggest deficit the 49ers have overcome this year in a victory.
Following the 0-for-8 start, Charlotte shot 26-of-51 (.510). The Niners hit nine threes (4 by Brown; 3 by Nash) as four players hit double figures (Basden, 19; Nash, 15; Brown, 13 and Curtis Withers, 12). Basden hit 6-of-8 shots and 7-of-9 free throws. His nine rebounds give him eight or more rebounds in five of the last six games. He's averaging 7.4 rebounds in C-USA play.
With wins in four of their last five and a four-game home winning streak, the 49ers (12-13; 7-6) moved into fourth-place in C-USA's American Division. The Niners face DePaul, Saturday at 3:00 at Halton Arena, in the program's annual "Homecoming Game" and the 49ers final home game of the year.
