SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- Rhode Island, which stands atop the A-10 standings, shot .679 in the second half to pull away from Charlotte, 86-69, Saturday afternoon. Rhode Island led 39-34 at the half but opened the second half with a 20-6 run to take a 19-point lead, 59-40 with 13:42 to play. Charlotte would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Five different Rhode Island players scored in double figures, led by Will Daniels and Jimmy Baron who both scored 16 points. Charlotte was led by E.J. Drayton, who scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Charlotte shot just .314 in the decisive second half and finished with 35% shooting. Rhode Island ended up shooting 61% for the game, including 50% from three-point range. Five different Rams hit a three-pointer, led by Baron, who nailed 4-of-5 threes, all in the second half.
De'Angelo Alexander added 13 points for the 49ers and Leemire Goldwire scored 11.
With 13 points, Alexander moved within 13 points of becoming the 49ers 21st 1000-point scorer and just the fifth to rrreach that mark in just two seasons.
The loss, for Charlotte, was their fifth this season when trying to get over .500. Charlotte is now 12-13; 5-7 in A-10 play. Charlotte falls to 1-9 in true road games this year.
The 86 points scored by Rhode Island are the third-most given up by the 49ers this season.
In each of the 49ers last two losses: Xavier, .636 & Rhode Island, .611, the opponent has shot over 60% from the field. Rhode Island also dominated the boards, 40-28 -- the fourth time this season that Charlotte has been outrebounded by double digits.
