Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Ahmad Nivins scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half Sunday and Saint Joseph's rallied to beat Charlotte 75-70.

Darrin Govens and Pat Calathes added 14 points apiece for the Hawks, who overcame 27 points from Charlotte's De'Angelo Alexander to win their third straight game.

Saint Joseph's (9-5, 2-0 Atlantic 10) trailed by 13 in the first half and 11 early in the second before Nivins went to work inside. He scored seven points in an 11-2 run that gave the Hawks their first lead with 5:47 left.

Nivins' two free throws with 3 minutes left made it 66-63 and Rivera's layup with just over 2 minutes left gave the Hawks a 70-65 lead.

After Alexander's driving layup with a minute left cut Charlotte's deficit to three at 70-67, Calathes hit a jumper with 34 seconds left then made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put it away for Saint Joseph's, which shot 64 percent in the second half.

Alexander hit 8-of-16 shots and 7-of-8 free throws, but got little help when it mattered. Leemire Goldwire scored 20 points, but shot 2-for-7 in the second half as the 49ers (6-8, 0-2) lost their second straight game, both after giving up big leads.

Charlotte led Dayton by nine points with under eight minutes left in a 66-63 loss on Thursday.

The Hawks, who shot 56 percent in a 48-point win over Duquesne Wednesday, missed their first 10 shots against Charlotte. Govens' driving layup with 12:11 left ended the drought.

Goldwire's 3-pointer with 5:07 left pushed the 49ers' lead to 29-16. Saint Joseph's cut its deficit to 36-27 at halftime despite hitting 8 of 25 shots, thanks to its rebounding. The Hawks held a 37-25 advantage on the glass and had 15 offensive rebounds.

Rob Ferguson had eight points and six rebounds for Saint Joseph's despite playing on a sprained ankle suffered in practice Friday.

Charlotte forward Antwon Coleman returned after missing Thursday's game with bronchitis, but appeared weak and didn't have a point or rebound in 10 minutes as the 49ers dropped to 4-2 at home.

NOTES: Supplied by Charlotte Sports Information:

Alexander's 27-point effort was his 8th 20-point game of the year and the 20th in his two-year 49er career.

With 27 points, Alexander surpassed 800 career points (815), leaving him within 185 of becoming the 21st player in 49er history to score 1000 career points.

Leemire Goldwire added 20 points, his 3rd 20-point game of the year and his highest scoring output since suffering an ankle injury at Mississippi State.

The five three-pointers Goldwire hit (5-of-9) are a season-high.

Charlotte fell to 1-7 when only Alexander, Goldwire and/or Drayton score in double figures. In games in which some other 49er hits double digits, the Niners are 5-1.
