College Park, Md. - Charles Dewhurst's drive to the hoop with 14:49 left to play knotted the score at 49-49, but as he landed his knee gave out dropping the Charlotte sophomore to the floor with a dislocated right knee.
Maryland (11-2) scored the next 16 points over the next three-plus minutes to deflate the 49ers, who had jumped out to an 18-7 lead in the first half and owned a 41-38 edge at the half.
Dewhurst, who will have an MRI to determine the extent of the injury, is likely out for the season. Dewhurst was making his second start in place of sophomore An'Juan Wilderness who has been sidelined with a stress fracture in the left foot. Wilderness could return, Jan. 10 for the 49ers game vs. Tulsa.
Dewhurst had six points and four rebounds in 18 minutes of play, adding two assists.
The 49ers (5-7) were led by junior RaShad Coleman, who scored 17 first-half points on his way to a career-best 21 points. Junior DiJuan Harris added 15 points with six assists and just one turnover. Harris had 11 first half points.
The 49ers shot 48% from the floor in the first half and 46% for the game. They hit 11-of-23 three-pointers (.478), but allowed Maryland to shoot 55% from the floor and 50% from long range in the decisive second half.
Maryland's Greivis Vasquez led all scorers with 27 points, leading five Terrapins in double figures.
The loss snapped the 49ers four-game win streak.
Charlotte travels to Duquesne, Wednesday to open Atlantic 10 play. The 49ers return home Jan. 10 to face Tulsa. The game time of that non-conference effort has been changed to 4:00 p.m.
