Rob Moxley

Player Profile

Associate Head Coach:
4th year (11th overall with 49ers)

Rob Moxley has been at head coach Bobby Lutz's side for 12 years and the two have enjoyed great success together. Considered one of the nation's top assistant coaches, Moxley is regularly listed among the best in the country -- whether it is in terms of his coaching or recruiting ability. He brings a wealth of experience as well as a passion and drive to the 49ers program that has helped produced some of the 49ers finest seasons, teams and players.

Moxley was named Associate Head Coach, May 1, 2006 and enters his fourth year in that role and his 11th year overall with the 49ers. He served as assistant coach for seven years (1999-2005) before accepting an assistant coaching position at Maryland in 2005-06. He returned to Charlotte after one season to take over as Associate Head Coach.

"Rob is one of the elite assistant coaches in the country as evidenced by his success in recruiting here and at Maryland," said Lutz. "In practice, Rob works primarily with development of our perimeter players, practice management and game planning for opponents."

In 2008, HoopScooponline.com ranked Moxley 44th among the nation's top 100 assistant coaches. In 2007, rivals.com ranked him as one of the Top 25 Recruiters in the country while Basketball Times ranked Moxley 10th in its top 16 "Friends of Junior Colleges". He helped land junior college standouts Charlie Coley and Lamont Mack -- two keys to the 49ers program-best 13th-ranked 2007-08 recruiting class (HoopScoop). Concentrating on coaching perimeter players, Moxley has helped the 49ers produce the league leader in three-pointers made or made per game in each of his first nine years (Diego Guevara, 1999; Jobey Thomas, 2000, 2001, 2002; Demon Brown, 2003; Brendan Plavich, 2004, 2005; Leemire Goldwire, 2007, 2008).

"My family and I are thrilled to be returning to the Charlotte 49ers family," said Moxley. "The opportunity to be associate head coach and work for my best friend in the coaching business is a perfect situation. (Chancellor) Dr. (Phil) Dubois and (director of athletics) Judy Rose envision the 49ers as a nationally-ranked program and are taking the steps necessary to ensure success. I know the program and the people well. Their success is something that I and my family want to be a part of."

Moxley spent seven years as an assistant to Lutz with the 49ers, beginning in 1998-99, Lutz's first season as head coach. He was also an assistant to Lutz at Pfeiffer University for two years (1993-95). He has helped the 49ers to five NCAA Tournament bids and two NIT appearances. With an NIT trip in his one season at Maryland, Moxley has enjoyed eight post-season tourneys in 11 years.

Moxley, who turns 41 in December, has helped land four Top 20 recruiting classes for the 49ers and was instrumental in signing 2001 ESPN.com National Freshman of the Year Rodney White and 2003 all-Conference USA choice Demon Brown. Moxley helped attract Maryland's 18th-ranked 2006 recruiting class (Rivals.com).

He began as an assistant under Lutz at Pfeiffer University in 1993. They worked together for two years before moving together to Gardner-Webb in 1995. When Lutz was offered an assistant position with the 49ers for 1995-96, Moxley remained at Gardner-Webb. He returned to Pfeiffer for two years, 1996-98, as an assistant to head coach Dave Davis.

A 1994 graduate of Pfeiffer, Moxley and his wife, Jennifer have three children: Joey (12), Emily (10) and Allison (7). He was a Junior College Division III all-America guard in 1991 at Montgomery (Md.) C.C. He played two seasons at Newberry (S.C.) College under coach Tom Quinn.
