Dewhurst Up Close
Dewhurst is capable of helping the 49ers in a multitude of ways.
What do you consider your greatest asset as a basketball player:
Probably my athletic ability and versatility. The strongest part is probably my defense. The weakest is outside shooting. I shot a lot on the gun this summer and worked on my range.
What part of the game do you enjoy the most:
Running -- the fast-paced game. It's a blast when you're running and everyone is sharing the ball. It can't get any better than that.
Dewhurst, who has lived in Charlotte since the 6th grade, joined a long line of Charlotteans who stayed at home to attend UNC Charlotte.
What was your perception of the 49ers prior to joining the program:
It was a very underrated program that didn't get the respect it deserved. We were overshadowed by the ACC when we were in Conference USA and winning conference titles against teams like Memphis and Marquette. I was really happy when they recruited me.
Did you have a favorite 49er when you were growing up:
Jobey Thomas, Curtis Withers. I actually remember living in California and seeing Diego (Guevara) and thinking how good a shooter he was.
You wear jersey #31 -- does that have anything to do with Charlotte native and former 49er great Jobey Thomas:
No, I had no idea. I probably won't have picked it. He's a hard player to live up to. I had no idea he knew who I was, but he came up to me this summer -- I was kind of in shock. It raised the level of competitiveness in the summer to have alumni come back and play with us. It made us play harder.
After a red-shirt season, he played his first full season in 2007-08.
How did the year off help you:
It helped me physically. I was able to work on my body, lifting -- and I was able to observe the college game and saw what adjustments I had to make to be a contributor to the team. (What really stood out was) the pace of the game and the physicality.
