Mills to Make Start for PawSox in Triple-A Playoffs

Former Niner All-American Earns Second Promotion of Season

Sept. 3, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Former Charlotte 49er and right-handed pitcher Adam Mills has been promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket and will pitch in the opening round of the International League playoff series against Yankee farm team Scranton/Wilkes Barre in the Friday contest.

Mills, an eighth-round selection of the Boston Red Sox in the 2007 draft, started the season at Lancaster of the class-A California League before earning a call up at the first of July to Double-A Portland of the Eastern League. He was 7-4 for Lancaster, and led the starting rotation with a 4.43 ERA in the high-altitude park.

Despite a record of 0-5 with Portland, he has had scoreless starts of six or more innings twice, and has allowed just five earned runs in his last 26.1 innings pitched for the Sea Dogs to earn the promotion.

Mills is the second-youngest player on the Pawtucket roster and will face the Triple-A Yankees line-up when he makes the start in game-two of the opening-round International Series.

Mills was the 2007 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, top-three finalist for the Roger Clemens Award (for the nation's top pitcher) and a consensus First-Team All-American. He led the nation that season in ERA (1.01) and tied for the most wins in the country (14) and was sixth in the NCAA in strikeouts (144). He finished his career as Charlotte's all-time leader in wins (30), shutouts (5), innings pitched (409.2) and starts (51).

In other playoff news, former Niner Jason Stanford was signed by the Cubs and assigned to Iowa, which plays Oklahoma in the opening round of the Pacific Coast League playoffs this week. Stanford is 3-1 in seven starts with the Iowa club. He is expected to make a start in the series.
