John Maine
Baseball
Pitcher
NY Mets
A former MVP, John hurled six scoreless innings to pick up the win vs. the Philadelphia Phillies in a game broadcast by ESPN, Sunday, Aug. 6. In so doing, Maine extended his own personal streak of scoreless innings pitched to over 23 innings, spanning his last three starts. It's the longest scoreless innings streak by a Mets pitcher since Al Leiter's 25 innings in 1998. Jerry Koosman holds the Mets record of 31 straight scoreless innings, set in 1973.
The 2001 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, Maine now owns a 2-3 record with a 2.08 ERA with the first-place Mets and solidified his position in Willie Randolph's rotation. "It's great to be one of the five starters on the best team in the National League," Maine said.
Maine was a sixth-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles in 2002 and was named the Orioles' 2003 Minor League Pitcher of the Year and pitched his first professional no-hitter. He picked up his first Major League win as an Oriole, Aug. 13, 2005 in a 1-0 win over Toronto. He was traded to the Mets, January 21, 2006. Maine set the 49ers school record with 12 wins and 144 strikeouts in 2001.
