Pittsburgh - Charlotte baseball alum Field Culbreth '86 was the second base umpire for the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star game on July 11 in Pittsburgh. It was the first All-Star appearance for the veteran, who joined the MLB Umpires Roster in 1999.
Culbreth, who lettered for the 49ers from 1984-86, previously worked the MLB League Championship Series (2000, 2003) and Division Series (2002, 2004). He was also on the umpiring crew for the game when Cal Ripken Jr. recorded his 3,000th hit.
In the 77th MLB All-Star game, the American League scored two runs with two outs in the ninth inning for a dramatic 3-2 win before a stunned crowd of 38,904 at PNC Park.
