Midland, Mich. - A pair of former Charlotte baseball teammates and graduates, Spencer Steedley and Derek McDaid, played on opposite sides in the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game, held on Tuesday at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan, home of the Great Lakes Loons.
Both players pitch in the Class A Midwest League in their second season of Minor League Baseball.
Teammates for two seasons, the former Niners are opponents in the league, and were on opposite sides in the game, with McDaid wearing an Eastern Division jersey and Steedley playing for the Western Division squad. McDaid appeared in the seventh inning for the East and Steedley pitched in the ninth for the West, though neither figured in the decision, a 5-4 West victory.
Steedley, who pitches for the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins), was a 25th round pick of the Twins in the 2007 Amateur Baseball Draft. A First-Team All-Atlantic 10 starting pitcher last season, Steedley finished with an 8-2 record and a 3.05 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 112 innings in his senior season. He was also the first player in team history to be First-Team All-Conference as a position player and a pitcher, earning first-team honors as an outfielder in the A-10 in 2006.
For his Charlotte career, he was 13-8, with a 5.05 ERA and 127 strikeouts. He also belted 22 career home runs and 47 doubles with a career .290 batting average. So far this season, the left-hander is 2-3 with a 2.34 ERA and seven saves with 47 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. He was one of three Snappers at the All-Star festivities. In 2007, playing for the Elizabethton Twins, he was 2-3, with a 2.92 ERA in 37 innings, adding 51 strikeouts.
McDaid, who finished his career in 2006, was a free agent signee of the San Diego Padres after completing his eligibility with the Niners, a two-year career which came after transferring in from Barton (Kansas) Community College. McDaid led the Niners in 2006 with nine wins (9-4), a 2.45 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 102.2 innings pitched. He tossed five complete games, with one shutout and one combined shutout in 15 starts in his senior season.
