Beloit, Wis. - A pair of former Charlotte baseball teammates and graduates, Spencer Steedley and Derek McDaid, will be heading to the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game, to be held on June 17th at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan, home of the Great Lakes Loons.
Both players pitch in the Class A Midwest League in their second season of Minor League Baseball.
Steedley, who pitches for the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins), was a 25th round pick of the Twins in the 2007 Amateur Baseball Draft. A First-Team All-Atlantic 10 starting pitcher last season, Steedley finished with an 8-2 record and a 3.05 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 112 innings in his senior season. He was also the first player in team history to be First-Team All-Conference as a position player and a pitcher, earning first-team honors as an outfielder in the A-10 in 2006.
For his Charlotte career, he was 13-8, with a 5.05 ERA and 127 strikeouts. He also belted 22 career home runs and 47 doubles with a career .290 batting averageSo far this season, the left-hander is 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA and four saves with 40 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. He is one of three Snappers heading to the All-Star festivities.
McDaid, who finished his career in 2006, was a free agent signee of the San Diego Padres after completing his eligibility with the Niners, a two-year career which came after transferring in from Barton (Kansas) Community College. McDaid led the Niners in 2006 with nine wins (9-4), a 2.45 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 102.2 innings pitched. He tossed five complete games, with one shutout and one combined shutout in 15 starts in his senior season.
Overall, he was 15-7 in 31 appearances (one in relief), with a career 3.72 ERA. In 184 innings pitched, he recorded 107 strikeouts. For the Wizards this season, McDaid is 3-0 with one save and a 2.52 ERA in 21 appearances. In 25 innings pitched, he has struck out 15 batters so far. He is also one of three Wizards going to the All-Star Game.
