Brentwood, Tenn. - A pair of Charlotte seniors has been listed amongst the nation's best players this week in the by-position Rivals.com Power rankings. Catcher Chris Taylor is on the list for the sixth consecutive week and has moved up to fourth by position in the country, while Brad McElroy finds himself on the list for the first time, at 14th-best.
Just three weeks ago, Taylor completed a run of homering in five straight games, and has put together separate nine and ten-game hit streaks this season en route to his current .363 average, and his 21 extra-base hits (including a team-best and career-high 10 home runs) and 43 RBI all lead the squad so far this season. He has hit a team-best two home runs in a game twice this year and his six-RBI at No. 3 South Carolina on March 5 is the individual game-high for the Niners this season.
McElroy currently holds a 26-game hitting streak, one short of the second-longest in school history. He leads Charlotte at a .397 batting average, with a team-best 54 hits, 13 doubles and 46 runs scored. He also paces the Niners with 27 walks and a .488 on-base percentage to go with a team-high 15 stolen bases. A solid defender, he has one error in 80 chances in center field this season. A third-team preseason All-American, McElroy is Charlotte's leading returning hitter from last year's record-setting season. In 2007, McElroy hit .401, with a team-high 11 home runs, 26 doubles and 68 RBI. He led the Atlantic 10 Conference in five offensive categories last season.
Charlotte plays all of its games on the road this week, visiting No. 4 North Carolina on Wednesday night before traveling to Massachusetts for an A-10 weekend series. The Niners are 27-7 overall, with a 9-3 league record.
