Charlotte Landing in More National Baseball Polls This Week

Charlotte in Three Polls, Receiving More Votes in Others

April 9, 2007

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers find themselves on a seven-game win streak and climbing the charts in several national polls entering this week. Charlotte is a school record 26-5 overall and 8-1 for first place in the Atlantic 10.

Last week, Charlotte garnered its first national ranking with a No. 29 slot in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll.

This week, the Niners are in a tie for No. 25 in the latest rankings.

Ping! Baseball has Charlotte at No. 29 in its latest poll. There is also a feature on the 49ers and senior starter Adam Mills is featured in the Ping! Spotlight Performances of the Week.

The USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll has Charlotte receiving 19 votes, up from 10 last week, which is the 33rd best in the country.

Charlotte also was one of the last five out of the weekly Rivals.com Top 25 poll.

A combination of clutch hitting and dominating pitching has Charlotte in the national spotlight. The Niners are tied for 13th in the country in runs scored per game (8.2) and are tied with North Carolina for the second lowest runs allowed total in the nation (3.2). These numbers have Charlotte tied at sixth overall with Okalahoma State in national scoring margin (+5.0), counting Division I opponents only. Charlotte's current seven-game winning streak is the third-most active streak in the nation, behind Arizona (14) and Michigan (10). (Source: WarrenNolan.com)

Charlotte starters are 17-1 overall, and the Niners are 19-1 at home, though home has been four different ballparks in four different cities as construction to the new Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium kept Charlotte off its own campus for the first 25 games of the year. Charlotte played the first 13 home games away from the friendly confines at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium (Kannapolis, N.C.), The Winthrop Ballpark (Rock Hill, S.C.) and Ferebee Field (Misenheimer, N.C.) The Niners put together a 12-1 record at those three ballparks, each having at least a half-hour bus ride to get there. So far back on campus, Charlotte is 7-0, after two weeks in the new digs, though construction continues on the press box, concession and ticket areas.

This week, Charlotte heads to #2/#3 North Carolina on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. The Tar Heels are second in the Baseball America Poll, while third in the Coaches' Poll. The Niners host Presbyterian College Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before heading to Rhode Island for an A-10 weekend series.
