Irving, Texas and Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers freshman catcher Chris Taylor has been chosen as the Conference USA Hitter of the Week, as announced by the league's office on Monday, April 4.
Taylor, a true freshman, becomes this season's second Conference USA Hitter of the Week honoree for Charlotte. He joins sophomore Kris Rochelle, who earned the honor on March 7. This is the first time since 2000 that the Niners have had two hitters of the week in the same season.
The former Mt. Pleasant standout had at least two hits and two RBI in all four Charlotte victories last week, going 8-for-17 (.471) with 10 RBI and seven runs scored. Charlotte won four straight road games last week, defeating ACC foe Wake Forest on Wednesday before completing a three-game sweep of C-USA foe Saint Louis over the weekend.
Taylor homered in three straight games, his first three collegiate home runs, and also walked three times, giving him a .550 on-base percentage. He tied for the team lead in batting among all 49er regulars last week, and raised his batting average from .212 to .265 with the performance.
Taylor posted four RBI in a 21-9 win over Saint Louis on Friday night, and added two RBI in each of the other three Niner wins. He scored seven times, plating two runs in each of the first three games. Taylor slugged 1.000 last week.
Taylor and the Niners host regional rival Winthrop on Wednesday night (6:00), before welcoming C-USA power Tulane to campus for a three-game series beginning at 6:00 on Friday. The Niners and Green Wave also meet on Saturday (2:00) and Sunday (1:00). Sunday's series finale will be televised live on C-SET (Carolinas Sports Entertainment Television).
