Charlotte Baseball Receiving Votes in Pair of National Polls

NCBWA and ESPN/USA Today Polls Show Niners in the Mix

March 14, 2007

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers are now receiving votes in two national polls. The Niners continue to receive votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) poll. Charlotte is now among those receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll. Le Moyne head coach Steve Owens is a voting member of that poll.

Charlotte is 14-3 coming off a four-game sweep of Le Moyne, the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Association champion, over the weekend. Charlotte has won all 11 home games this season, despite having played them at three off-campus sites. The Niners are sixth in the country in runs allowed per game (2.8 runs) and fifth in the nation in scoring margin (+5.5 runs). The Niners have the seventh-best active winning streak in the country and are tied with this weekend's opponent, College of Charleston, with the 10th longest home win streak in the nation. Charlotte's winning percentage is tied with Kansas State for 13th best in the NCAA, while Charlotte has posted the tenth-best run output of the season (24, vs. Radford on 2/18). That 24-0 win put Charlotte seventh in the country in margin of victory for a single game.

The Niners will play their final scheduled off-campus home games of the season this weekend, as Charlotte heads to Kannapolis to host College of Charleston for a home-and-home series this weekend. The Niners and Cougars will play a pair at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium (Friday and Saturday) and then head to Patriots Point in Charleston to play the third game of the series on Sunday. College of Charleston went 3-2 in the NCAA Tournament last year, winning the Lexington, Kentucky regional and losing in the Atlanta, Georgia Regional to College World Series participant Georgia Tech.

This weekend's schedule calls for a Friday game at 2 p.m., and a Saturday noon start. The teams hop on buses after the game and head to Charleston to complete the series with a 1 p.m. start in the Palmetto State.
