Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers intensified practice over their second weekend together on the field this spring in preparation for the 2008 season.
"We finished our first full week of practice and continue to experiment with various line-up combinations and pitching rotations," said head coach Loren Hibbs. "Our veteran players have performed well to this point. Our younger players have struggled but are beginning to understand the consistent effort level it takes to become a quality team."
The Niners coaches kept a "hands-off" approach in their first weekend, but increased the instruction as they progressed into the second week. Charlotte continues to scrimmage and practice, trying pitching, defense and offensive rotations along the way. The team hits the field on Tuesday and Wednesday for practice and scrimmage situations. Thursday will be a practice day, while the weekend will see three scrimmages in three days on the final weekend of preparation for the 2008 season.
Charlotte begins a 35-game home docket next Friday, February 22, when the Niners host Manhattan for a three-game series. The Friday contest begins at 4 p.m. in the debut of the completed Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium. The 49ers will be at home the first five weekends of the season.
Charlotte was a regional finalist and conference champion in 2007, winning a school-record 49 games and their first postseason games, a pair of wins to eliminate North Carolina State last June.
