Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers hit two home runs and belted out 14 hits to defeat Rhode Island in game one of a doubleheader 8-2 Friday at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in Atlantic 10 baseball action. Charlotte is now 39-13 overall and 18-7 in league play. Rhode Island is now 28-24-1 overall, with a 14-10-1 league record.

First baseman Rob Lyerly blasted his 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first, and drove in three RBI with an RBI single in the seventh to lead all players.

Lyerly's homer gave Charlotte a 2-0 lead, one the Niners never lost.

Charlotte shortstop Shayne Moody and right fielder Alan Parks, as well as Rams left fielder Pete Mastors all had three hits in the game. Moody, Parks and Aaron Bray scored twice for Charlotte.

Charlotte freshman starter Joe Yermal earned his eighth win of the season. He scattered eight hits and two walks in six innings, allowing both Rams runs. He struck out one.

Reliever Kelly McLain grabbed his second save of the season by finishing the game for Charlotte. He allowed two hits and struck out four hitters.

Rams starter Brett Palanski took the loss. He gave up 11 hits and two walks in six innings, allowing six Charlotte runs.

Game two begins at 5:10 p.m. with Charlotte earning at least a share of the Atlantic 10 Championship with one win in its last two games.
