CHARLOTTE, NC - The Southern Miss baseball team behind two runs in the ninth inning defeated Charlotte, 3-1, in the second game of their three-game series.
The story of the game was pitching by both teams. The 49ers also played stellar defense with a season-high four double plays.
For Southern Miss three pitchers combined to allow only three hits and one run. Daniel Best collected his fourth win of the season after allowing two hits and one run in three innings. Austin Tubb recorded three strikeouts in the ninth inning to collect his eighth save of the season.
Charlotte's Adam Mills took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits over an inning and two-thirds.
Charlotte starter Matt Landphair did not figure in the decision but he gave Charlotte a solid seven innings of work by allowing only one run on eight hits.
For the second straight game Marc Maddox gave Southern Miss an early lead on a first inning home run. He connected on a his 12th home run of the season a solo blast over the right field wall for the game's first run.
Charlotte tied the score when Adam Willard blasted a solo home run over the center field wall in the sixth inning.
Ryan Firth led off the ninth inning with his 19th home run of the season helping Southern Miss regain the lead for good. Then, Jason Lowery scored an insurance run in the inning on Beau Griffin's double to left center field.
The two teams conclude their three-game series, Sunday, May 16 at 1 pm.
