CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team fell to #17 Southern Miss, 11-4, in the first game of their three-game Conference USA series.
Thomas Bowker, Jamie Rusco, Brian Scafe, Randall Poplin, Adam Floyd and Cory Lane each had a hit for the 49ers.
The story of the game was the pitching of Southern Miss' Patrick Ezell. Ezell held the 49ers scoreless on three hits over seven innings to record his fifth win of the season.
Southern Miss took the early 2-0 lead when Maddox connected on a his first home run of the game a two-run shot over the left field wall in the first inning.
The Golden Eagles increased their lead when Maddox connected on his second home run of the game a two-run blast over the left field wall in the fourth inning.
Then, Southern Miss plated four more runs in the fifth inning. Jason Lowery connected on a two-run home run over the left field for the first two runs of the inning. Then, Beau Griffin and Kevin Coker scored on Shepherd's double off the left field wall.
Southern Miss tacked on two more runs on Firth's two-run double down the left field line in the sixth inning.
Charlotte scored twice in the eighth inning on bases loaded hit batters. Floyd and Bowker scored the inning's two runs when Adam Willard and Rusco were hit with the bases loaded.
Southern Miss scored their final run on Shepherd's double to right field in the ninth inning.
The 49ers closed out the scoring with two runs in the ninth inning. Poplin, who reached base on a double to left field, scored on Floyd's single. Then, Kris Rochelle scored the inning's other run on Cory Lane's single to left field.
