KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Charlotte 49ers dropped a slugfest to Conference USA foe #29 TCU, 20-15. The two teams combined for 35 runs and 41 hits in the game. The 49ers made the game very interesting with eight runs on nine hits in the ninth inning.
Charlotte collected a season-high 20 hits in the game. This is the first time that Charlotte has collected 20 hits in a game since pounding out 25 hits against Tulane, March 16, 2002.
Brian Scafe paced all hitters with a career-high five hits, five RBI, two doubles and a triple. George Sandel, Nick Blackmon, Brad Erwin, Marko Little and Michael Roane each had two hits for the 49ers.
TCU jumped out to an early lead with eleven runs in the first two innings.
Charlotte then plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brian York scored the 49ers' first run on Scafe's double off the right field wall. Then, Scafe scored on Roane's single to center field.
The 49ers added another run in the third inning when Erwin, who reached base on a double to left field, scored on Alex Derhak's single to center field.
TCU increased their lead, 12-3, with a run on a couple of hits in the fourth inning.
Then, the Horned Frogs plated another run in the fifth inning.
Charlotte cut the TCU lead to 13-6 with three runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Erwin scored the first run of the inning on York's sacrifice fly to right field. Then, Lamm and Derhak scored on Scafe's double to left field.
Then, TCU exploded for five runs in the eighth inning increasing their lead to 19-6.

Then, the 49ers made the game very interesting by scoring eight runs on nine hits in the bottom of the ninth inning. Poplin and Little both connected on home runs in the inning. Blackmon and Scafe both had run-scoring doubles in the inning. Scafe also had a run-scoring single in the inning. Sandel, Blackmon, Poplin, Little, Lamm, Derhak, Scafe and Roane all scored in the inning.
The two teams will conclude their Conference USA series, Sunday, May 11 at 1 pm at Fieldcrest-Cannon Stadium.
