May 3, 2008

Box Score

Bronx, N.Y. - The Charlotte 49ers scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as they evened an Atlantic 10 road series by defeating Fordham 7-1 at Houlihan Park Saturday in baseball action. The Niners improve to 33-13 overall, 13-7 in league play and just a half-game behind idle Xavier and Duquesne for the league lead. Fordham drops to 26-20-1, 10-10 in the league.

Sophomore designated hitter Rob Lyerly drove in a pair with the bases loaded in the first with a single to center. Freshman second baseman Corey Shaylor knocked in the third with an RBI groundout.

Charlotte added a pair of runs in fifth, one on a throwing error and the other on a bases-loaded walk drawn by right fielder Chris Taylor. The RBI was his team-leading 61st of the season.

The Niners got two more on the board in the sixth on three hits and a wild pitch. Center fielder Cory Tilton drove in one with a one of three singles on the day and left fielder O'Brien Taylor scored after he doubled, stole third and came home on a wild pitch from Fordham starter J.P. Mack.

Junior starting pitcher Zach Rosenbaum had a shutout through five for Charlotte, but allowed a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for the lone Rams run.

No one was able to score on the relief pitching, with both Kelly McLain of Charlotte and John Young of Fordham finishing for the teams.

McLain got his first career save on three complete innings of relief. He allowed one hit and one walk, striking out four.

Rosenbaum pushed his record to 5-1, allowing four hits and a season-high six walks in his six innings. He struck out four.

Mack took the loss to drop to 3-4. He allowed all seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and six walks, striking out three.

After giving up five hits on Friday night, Fordham could only muster five hits in the loss, with no Ram getting more than one hit.

O'Brien Taylor and Shaylor had two hits each.

The Sunday series-clinching game has been moved ahead to noon due to weather coming into the area.
