Aaron Bray's Two-RBI Double Lifts Charlotte Past Furman 4-2

May 1, 2007

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Third baseman Aaron Bray's two-RBI double in the sixth lifted the Charlotte 49ers over the Furman Paladins 4-2 Tuesday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium in non-conference baseball action. Charlotte, the No. 25 team according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, improves to 35-9, while Furman drops to 13-32 this season.

Charlotte got on the board in the first on a solo home run by catcher Kris Rochelle, his fourth of the season. The Niners added another run in the second, scoring Aaron Bray who walked and stole second, on an RBI single by Spencer Steedley.

Charlotte gave away a pair of unearned runs in the third on two errors, a walk and a hit. Third baseman Bobby Hubbard recorded an RBI groundout in that inning.

The offenses were held in check by both pitching staffs until Charlotte rallied for two more in the sixth thanks to a Bray's hit, which scored Rochelle, who reached by walk and designated hitter Chris Taylor, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Furman managed just three hits on the night, while Charlotte only recorded five.

Furman reliever Butch Pucetas gave up the go-ahead run and took the loss (0-2). He recorded just two outs and gave up a run on a hit and walk.

Charlotte reliever Bryan Hamilton earned the win for the Niners (4-1). He lasted three innings of scoreless, hitless relief, recording two strikeouts. Matt Foard pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk plus four strikeouts to pick up his first save of the season.

Charlotte will try to hold on to first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference when the Niners travel to Cincinnati to take on Xavier for a Thursday-Saturday series.
