KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team split a doubleheader with Conference USA foe Memphis at Fieldcrest-Cannon Stadium. The 49ers behind Alex Derhak's two-run home run in the fourth inning defeated Memphis, 4-3, in the second game. Memphis behind Brent Dlugach's two home runs defeated Charlotte, 7-0, in the first game.

With the split, the 49ers improved to 17-20 overall and 8-10 in Conference USA. While, Memphis goes to 14-29 overall and 5-15 in Conference USA.

In game one, Memphis took a 1-0 lead when Chad House scored on a Kurt Welch's double down the left field line in the first inning.

Memphis tacked on another run when Chad House scored on Bill Moss' triple down the left field line in the third inning.

The Tigers added another run in the fourth inning on Dlugach's solo home run over the left field wall.

Memphis made the final score, 7-0, when Dlugach connected on a grand slam in the sixth inning.

Memphis pitcher Jarrett Grube recorded a complete game four-hit shutout in the first game of the doubleheader.

In game two, Memphis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a couple of runs on two hits in the first inning.

The 49ers tied the score, 2-2, with a couple of runs on two hits in the bottom half of the first inning. Randall Poplin and Brad Erwin scored for the 49ers in the inning.

Charlotte took their first lead of the series when Alex Derhak connected on a two-run home run down the left field line in the fourth inning.

Memphis scored a run on two hits in the sixth inning making the final score, 4-3.

Charlotte pitcher Justin Brown improved to 3-1 on the season after limiting Memphis to three runs with only one earned run in five innings. Then, Erik Walker held Memphis scoreless for the final two innings for his third save of the season.

 

 

The 49ers return to action this week with two non-conference home games at Tom and Lib Phillips Field. The 49ers host Appalachian State, Tuesday, April 29 at 6:30 pm. Then, they host nationally ranked Wake Forest, Wednesday, April 30 at 6:30 pm. The 49ers will have a celebrity throw out the ceremonial first pitch before each game. Before Tuesday's Appalachian State game, NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace will be throwing out the first pitch. Then before Wednesday's Wake Forest game, former Charlotte 49ers great and major leaguer Chris Haney will be throwing out the first pitch.
