CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team's despite two home runs from Adam Willard saw their late innings rally fall short as they dropped the series finale to UAB, 9-8.
Willard became the sixth Charlotte player to connect on two home runs a game this season. He collected three hits with three RBI. He also scored three runs in the game. Jamie Rusco also collected three hits with three RBI.
Nathan McCorkle paced the Blaxers with three hits and five RBI.
UAB took an early 2-0 lead when Daniel Hill and McCorkle scored in the first inning.
Charlotte knotted the score with two runs of their own in the first inning. Willard scored the first run on Rusco's single to right field. Then, Rusco scored the inning's other run on Kris Rochelle's infield groundout.
Then, the Blazers exploded for four runs on four hits in the second inning. McCorkle connected on a two-run single to right field in the inning. Then, Jeremy Moran connected on a two-run double to left center field in the inning.
The 49ers cut the UAB lead in half when Rusco connected on his eleventh home run of the season a two-run blast over the right field wall in the fifth inning.
UAB plated three more runs in the sixth inning on McCorkle's three-run home run over the left field wall.
Charlotte added two runs in the seventh inning. Willard blasted his fifth home run of the season leading off the inning. Then, Thomas Bowker, who reached base on a double to left center field, scored on Rochelle's sacrifice fly to right field.
Charlotte made the final score, 9-8, when Willard connected on his second home run of the game a two-out two-run blast over the left field wall in the eighth inning.
The 49ers return to action Tuesday, April 27 when they travel to Winthrop.
