Charlotte, N.C. - For the second time in as many games this season, Wake Forest hit a home run in extra innings to defeat the No. 22 Charlotte 49ers 3-2 in 11 innings on Tuesday night at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
Charlotte is now 32-8, while Wake Forest improves to 23-22.
Leading off the eleventh inning, Brett Linnenkohl belted a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to score the go-ahead run and Wake closer Josh Ellis held on to get the win by holding Charlotte scoreless over the final three innings.
The loss went to Charlotte reliever Matt Foard (1-2). Foard threw the final four innings for Charlotte, allowing three hits and no walks, striking out four.
Charlotte and Wake both scored a run in the fourth inning. The Deacons got on the board in the top half when Brett Linnenkohl hit a single through the right side of the infield, advanced to second on a wild pitch, got to third on a sacrifice bunt by Andy Goff and scored on a throwing error by catcher Kris Rochelle.
The Niners tied the game in the bottom half on an RBI single by Aaron Bray, who scored Left fielder Brad McElroy, after he reached with his team-leading 17th double of the season.
Charlotte took the lead in the fifth, on an RBI single by McElroy, scoring shortstop Shayne Moody from second after he reached via a walk and took second on a wild pitch.
Wake Forest tied the game in the seventh on three hits, the last of which was an RBI single by designated hitter Michael Murray, which scored center fielder Ben Terry.
The Niners threatened in the 11th, getting a pair of runners on, but Ellis got the final two Charlotte batters to ground out to end the game.

Hunter tossed six innings, allowed seven hits and two walks, allowing a pair of earned runs. He struck out six.
Pfirrman tossed seven innings, allowing five hits and a walk, and two runs, just one earned. He struck out a career-high nine Deacons.
For Charlotte, Bray was three-for-four and Moody was one-for-three, drawing three walks in the game.
Linnenkohl and Evan Ocheltree had two hits each for Wake Forest.
Charlotte will travel to Washington, D.C. to return to conference play beginning Friday, when they take on George Washington for a three-game series.
