CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers behind a season-high 19 hits defeated Winthrop, 14-5, at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.

With the win, the 49ers improved to 15-16 overall. While, Winthrop fell to 23-14 overall.

All nine Charlotte starters collected at least one hit in the game. George Sandel, Thomas Bowker, Randall Poplin and Jamie Rusco each had three hits in the game. Brian Scafe collected two hits and four RBI. Also, Adam Floyd collected two hits.

Also, eight of the nine starters scored for the 49ers. Bowker, Poplin, Rusco, Brad Lamm and Scafe each scored two runs for the 49ers.

Winthrop took a 1-0 lead when Bennett Stapf scored on Kevin Slowey's double down the left field line in the second inning.

The 49ers exploded for seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. Lamm, Scafe, Floyd, Sandel, Bowker, Poplin and Brad Erwin scored in the inning for the 49ers.

Then, Winthrop scored a run in the third and two runs in the fourth to creep back into the game, 7-4.

Charlotte answered back with three runs in their half of the fourth inning. Bowker, who leadoff the inning with a triple to left field, scored on Poplin's double to right field. Then, Poplin and Rusco scored on Erwin's double to center field.

Winthrop made the score, 10-5, when Daniel Carte scored on a Matt Repec single to right center field in the seventh inning.

The 49ers tacked on four more runs in the eighth inning behind Scafe's first career grand slam over the left center field wall.

The 49ers host Furman, Wednesday, April 16 at 6:30 pm at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.
