CHARLOTTE, NC - The 10th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used three home runs to defeat the Charlotte 49ers baseball team, 8-5, Wednesday night at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.
Adam Willard, Spencer Steedley, Adam Floyd and Cory Lane each had two hits for the 49ers.
Chase Younts had three hits including a home run for North Carolina. Mike Daniel collected two hits for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels took a 3-0 lead on home runs by Sammy Hewitt and Younts in the second inning.
Charlotte plated their first run when Floyd, who reached base on a double to center field, scored on a North Carolina fielding error in the third inning.
North Carolina made the score, 5-1, with two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Daniel and Younts scored for the Tar Heels.
Steedley scored the 49ers second run on a leadoff home run over the right field wall in the fourth inning.
Hewitt scored his second run of the game for North Carolina on Younts' single to left center field in the fifth inning.
The Tar Heels tacked on two more runs on a couple of hits in the seventh inning. Marshall Hubbard leadoff the inning with a home run over the left field. Then, Daniel scored the inning's other run on Younts' infield single.
Charlotte added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Floyd scored his second run of the game on Willard's single to right center field. Then, Lane scored the other run on Jamie Rusco's deep sacrifice fly to center field.
Lane scored the game's final run on a Kris Rochelle's single to center field in the ninth inning.
With the loss, Charlotte falls to 14-16 on the season. While, North Carolina improved to 26-8 on the season.
