HATTIESBURG, MS - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team rallied from six runs down but it was not enough as #23 Southern Miss scored three unanswered runs in the seventh inning to win the series finale, 10-8.

The 49ers tied a season-high with 15 hits in the game. George Sandel led the 49ers with a season-high four hits along with three RBI. Michael Roane, Adam Willard, Brian Scafe and Brad Lamm each had two hits for the 49ers.

Southern Miss plated the game's first run when Matt Shepherd scored on Jeff Cook's single to right field in the first inning.

The Golden Eagles added a run in the second inning when Griff Israel scored on Beau Griffin's bloop single to center field.

Southern Miss added four more runs in the fourth inning on three hits increasing their lead to 6-0.

The 49ers cut the Southern Miss lead in half when they plated three runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Brian Scafe scored the 49ers' first run on George Sandel's third hit of the game. Then, Thomas Bowker scored on Michael Roane's double down the right field line. Sandel scored the inning's final run on Randall Poplin's single to left field.

Southern Miss added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Israel scored his second run of the game on Jarrett Hoffpauir's double to left center field.

The 49ers exploded for five runs on five hits taking an 8-7 lead in the sixth inning. Brad Erwin and Adam Willard scored the inning's first two runs on Brad Lamm's single to center field. Then, Lamm and Brian Scafe tied the score on Sandel's fourth hit of the game. Bowker scored the go-ahead run on Michael Roane's sacrifice bunt.

 

 

Southern Miss regained the lead for good, 10-8, with three runs in the seventh inning. All three Southern Miss runs were as the result of Charlotte miscues.

With the loss, the 49ers fell to 14-16 overall and 6-8 in Conference USA. While, Southern Miss improved to 26-10 overall and 11-4 in Conference USA.

The 49ers return action against Winthrop, Tuesday, April 15 at 6:30 pm at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.
