HATTIESBURG, MS - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team behind 11 hits and a complete game pitching performance from Zachary Treadway defeated #23 Southern Miss, 8-5, on the road. This win marked the first time since April 1, 1994 that Charlotte has won the first game of a series at Southern Miss.
With the win, Charlotte evened their overall record at 14-14 and Conference USA record at 6-6. With the loss, Southern Miss fell to 24-10 overall and 9-4 in Conference USA.
Treadway won his fourth straight Conference USA start after throwing his third complete game of the season. Treadway scattered seven hits and had five strikeouts in nine innings.
Jamie Rusco paced the 49ers with three hits, two RBI and two runs. Randall Poplin collected two hits and scored three runs for the 49ers. George Sandel also had two hits and scored two runs for Charlotte.
The 49ers took an early 3-0 lead with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Sandel, who reached base on a double to left field, scored on Rusco's single to right field. Then, Poplin scored on Brad Erwin's single to right field with the second run of the inning. Rusco scored the inning's final run on Brian Scafe's bases loaded walk.
Southern Eagles answered with a run in the bottom half of the first inning on Jeff Cook's home run over the right field wall.
The Golden Eagles cut the Charlotte lead in half, 3-2, when Jason Lowery scored on Clint King's single to left field in the fourth inning.
Then, Charlotte exploded for four runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Sandel scored his second run of the game on Rusco's single to center field. Then, Poplin scored the next run on Adam Willard's sacrifice fly to right field. Rusco would then score on Brad Lamm's double to center field. Erwin scored the inning's final run on Scafe's single to left field.

Southern Miss made the score, 8-4, when Clint King connected on a two-run home run over the right field wall in the sixth inning.
Southern Miss scored the game's final run in the eighth inning on Cook's second home run of the game.
The two teams will continue their three-game Conference USA series, Saturday, April 12 at 5 pm.
