HOUSTON - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team split a doubleheader on the road at Conference USA foe Houston, Saturday afternoon. The Cougars won the first game, 6-4, taking advantage of 10 hits. In game two, the 49ers used timely hitting and solid pitching to earn a 5-3 win.

With the split of the doubleheader, Charlotte's record goes to 14-15, 4-8 in C-USA. Houston is now 14-20 overall, 7-5 in C-USA.

Randall Poplin paced the 49ers with four hits including a home run in the two games. Thomas Bowker had three hits all in the second game of the doubleheader.

The 49ers got solid pitching from Matt Landphair, Adam Mills and Erik Walker in the final game of the doubleheader. Landphair scattered seven hits and allowed two runs only one earned in four and a third innings. Then, Mills collected his second win of the season by only allowing one run on three hits in four innings of relief. Walker got the final two outs of the game to record his second save of the season.

In game one, Charlotte took their first lead of the series when Bowker scored on Adam Willard's double to left center field in the first inning.

Willard scored the 49ers second run with his fourth home run of the season over the right field wall leading off the third inning.

Cole Bruce cut the Charlotte lead in half when he scored on Travis Tully's single to center field in the bottom of the third inning.

Houston tied the game when Jake Stewart scored on Bruce's sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth inning.

Then, Houston took control of the game with four runs on five hits in the fifth inning. The big hit of the inning was a two-run double down the left field line by Stuart Musslewhite.

 

 

Poplin connected on his second home run of the series a solo blast over the left center field wall in the seventh inning.

Charlotte plated the final run of the game when Adam Floyd scored on Cory Lane's single to center field in the ninth inning.

In game two, the 49ers again took an early lead that they would not relinquish on Kris Rochelle's two-run home run over the left field wall in the first inning.

The 49ers tacked on another run in the second inning when Michael Roane scored on Bowker's double down the left field line.

Houston cut into the Charlotte lead with two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Bruce and Nick Bott scored on Musslewhite's single to left field.

In the sixth inning, Bowker, who stole second and third after reaching base on a single, scored on a wild pitch giving Charlotte a 4-2 lead.

Jamie Rusco scored the 49ers final run in the seventh inning on Poplin's two-out single to right field.

The Cougars plated the game's final run in the eighth inning when Nick Bott scored on Patrick Breen's infield groundout.

The 49ers return to Tom and Lib Phillips Field as they host #14 North Carolina, Wednesday, April 14 at 6 pm.
